microsoft has made it easier to coordinate workspaces using touchscreen devices with the release of hardware design to link multiple touchscreen devices. The release is open-source.
In partnership with University College London, microsoft Research releases a new modular system for creating customized workspaces using multiple touchscreen devices such as microsoft Surface Pro 2, Apple iPad Air Tablet, and iPhone 7 Did.
The SurfaceConstellations, a conference on human factors for computing systems held in Montreal, Canada in April, will design a 3D print bracket to hold multiple different touchscreen device information and automatically recognize connected devices. Includes capacitive links for Web-based GUI tools to help users configure the setup, but in most cases, the software approach is left to the individual needs of the user.
Researchers have introduced four different potential applications. For gamers, the team has shown three tablet interfaces for playing Scrabble between two players. For music enthusiasts, researchers set up a three-tablet multi-screen music editing suite. For traders, the demonstration proposed a wall of six tablets, and a more active business analytics application set up three tablets linked to a smartphone.
The key to the system is a capacitive link mounted on a bracket printed using 3D printing technology that establishes a connection between devices. In this system, the bracket contains a second conductive material. It covers a small part of the touch screen and is recognized as a unique touchpoint.
In addition to using one of the researcher-developed setups, users can rearrange various brackets to customize their own setup or use source files provided by MakerBot Customizer and GitHub researchers. You can also create your own brackets.
Researchers at microsoft and University College London have published research papers detailing the system. According to the paper, the platform “allows anyone with access to a 3D printer and multiple tablets/phones to design and build their own multi-surface workspace.” Using devices in concert, SurfaceContellations is one way to facilitate this interaction.
